What does the Bible says about abortion?

abortion, exodus 30, Gospel of Matthew, Jeremiah, Jeremiah 1:5, Pro-life, Prophet Jerimiah

Children are an inheritance from the Lord that bring blessing , as well as responsibility into the home. The bible revealed that Jesus loved children and referred to their faith as a blue print of that which is necessary for us to do to enter into the kingdom of of heaven. (Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven….Matthew 18:3). It was in this same breath of this proclamation that He also condemn anyone who willfully  injure or harm a child. (Matthew 18:-10…Luke 18:15-17).

Despite the special place of children in the heart of God, recent history has not been so kind to them, particularly before birth. Since the 1980s the Center for Disease Control and prevention has recorded the number of surgical procedures that resulted in abortion to be well over one million per year. Although issues surrounding abortion are quite complex, this estimate of lives terminated before their time is staggering and heart-rending.

There are various theological and scientific arguments put forward as to precisely when a fetus constitutes a person. The big question however, is when does life begins?

Several scriptural references do touch the surface and deserve at best a hearing. Firstly, the sixth commandment forbids killing (Exodus 30:13), while the shedding of innocent blood is listed among the seven deadly sins hated by the Lord (Proverbs 6:16-18). In the calling of the prophet Jeremiah, God declared that he was known before he had been formed in the belly and was sanctified and ordained as a prophet before thou camest forth out of the womb (Jeremiah 1:5). While John the Baptist was in the womb awaiting birth, he leaped for joy when he heard the greeting received by his mother from the Virgin Mary who was herself  carrying the Christ Child at the time (Luke 1:41-44). These passages tend to be very troublesome for those who argue against the right of the unborn.

According to scriptures, the sanctity of life is of high priority but abortion is a subject matter of high complexity, not as easily judged as some would suppose. Even among Christians there is debate  as to whether fetal abortion is ever justified, e.g., when the mother’s life is endangered by a pregnancy. NB: My use of this example is neither to condone the act nor to further confound the issue, but rather to point out its difficulties and thereby emphasize the greater need to minister with compassion to those who have experienced the crisis.

Whether chosen as an alternative to an unwanted pregnancy, or as a last resort to save life, the reality of abortion is traumatic for women who experience it. Hence their desperate need for support and not harsh criticism.

Social issues including abortion have always played important roles in presidential elections. Abortion however, is a moral issue that has divided the country along party lines. It has become a right and left issue that is getting out of hand.

So what are the current candidates vying for the Republican nomination in the up coming presidential election saying about abortion?

Mitt Romney changed his belief on the issue of abortion back in 2007 changing from pro-choice to pro-life and while he was Massachusetts governor he proclaimed he would preserve and protect women’s right of an abortion. His biggest mistake on republican values was supporting the use of the abortion medicine in 2002 (better known as RU-486) which often can induce many health issues for women. Now he says he would like to see Roe V. Wade eradicated in its entirety and he’d fight to stop abortions in this country state by state. abortion providers.

Jon Huntsman says he is against abortion and has a very good pro-life track record. He’s personally established pro life laws. As an example, in Feb of 2009 while governor of Utah he signed a bill that would make 2nd trimester abortions unlawful.

Newt Gingrich says that abortion should be prohibited and physicians who carry out abortions should be penalized legally.

Herman Cain carries a solid position, and sometimes controversial stance about abortion matters. In his ’04 Georgia US Senate run he said abortion has to be illegal even during situations of rape and incest. Presently Cain is demanding the defunding of Planned Parenthood.

Michele Bachmann is one hundred percent against abortions. She has been firmly Pro-Life from the time that she had seen the well known ’76 documentary film, ‘How Should We Live Then?’ and also was standing outside the of doors abortion establishments offering advice and prayer. She emphasizes that abortion ought to be criminal and that life starts off at conception till natural death.

Rick Santorum is unquestionably against abortion and believes that “a child is a child” and regardless of whether that child is conceived because of physical violence it’s still at no-fault of the child. Thus he believes that even in the case connected with rape and incest abortion ought to be prohibited. He guided the suspension of partial-birth abortions and would aim to appoint judges that will put an end to Roe v Wade as commander-in-chief in 2012.

Tim Pawlenty suggests if we can change the hearts of family and friends then we can easily proceed closer to halting abortions in the country. In Minnesota the governor was happy to approve the “Women’s Right To Know” law which stalls abortion and helps teach females in advance of opting to end their pregnancy. In his latest claims he has stated he would like to overturn Roe V Wade.

Gary Johnson is the least among the apostles who sings a different tune. He endorses abortion and is pro-choice.

Rick Perry is soaring in the polls as a GOP presidential candidate but his legacy as Texas governor continues to haunt him.

One of the Texas governor’s staunchest critics, the Guardian‘s Amanda Marcotte says the governor continues to demonstrate an open hostility toward sex education, family planning, and women.

According to Amanda, though Rick Perry is soaring in the polls as a GOP presidential candidate, his legacy as Texas governor continues to haunt him, especially when it comes to the issue of abortion rights and women in general.

Last week, a U.S. district judge blocked a “draconian anti-abortion regulation” Perry signed into law in May of this year.

The regulation would have required women seeking an abortion to view a sonogram and listen to the fetus’ heartbeat while a doctor rattled off a detailed description of the fetus’ anatomical development — and then forcibly ponder their decision for an additional 24 hours before an abortion could be performed.

The in-dispute regulation, in addition to Perry’s funding cuts to family planning programs, demonstrates his hostility to contraception, abortion rights, women’s health, and sex education. Here is an excerpt:

What’s truly alarming about the law is the searing contempt for women’s dignity and intelligence baked right into it. Women would be required to go through an uncomfortable, invasive vaginal probe sonogram in order to get the picture and audible heartbeat required. They would then be sent home 24 hours to “think” about the decision, putting the Texas government in the position of a schoolteacher sending women to the corner.

Probing “dirty girls” with vaginal wands and then punishing them as though they were naughty children? This seems like Perry and the Texas legislature have mixed up writing laws with scripting pornography. Unfortunately, for the women of Texas, these ritual humiliations dreamed up by Republican legislators aren’t actually sexy fantasies but miserable realities — but for a federal judge remembering that women, too, have constitutional rights.
